
Getting the Wattage Right for Your Bathroom Heater
There is nothing worse than stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. But if you pick the wrong wattage for your ceiling heater, you’re either going to be shivering in cold spots or paying for electricity you aren’t even feeling. Here is the secret: you aren’t actually heating the air. You’re using infrared waves to warm up your skin and the surfaces around you. It’s more like standing in the sun than sitting in a heated room. Finding the sweet spot for your space It really comes down to how much room you have. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room—something under 4m²—a single 250W to 400W lamp is plenty. Anything more and you’ll feel like you’re in a sauna within two minutes. For those big master baths (think 8m² to 12m²), you’ll need more muscle. You can either go with a few lamps spread out or a couple of high-output 600W-800W units. Just be careful. Putting an 800W lamp in a small stall is overkill—it’ll feel way too aggressive. On the flip side, a 250W lamp in a huge room is basically useless because the heat just doesn’t reach you before it fades. Location is everything Where you put the lamp matters just as much as the power. I always suggest putting them right above the shower or the vanity. When the heat doesn’t have to travel far, you can actually get away with lower wattage and still feel that cozy, instant warmth the second you step out. The trade-off: Speed vs. Your Circuit Higher wattage is great because it’s instant. Flip the switch, and boom—you’re warm. But there’s a catch. More power means a heavier pull on your electrics. If you’re wiring up several 600W lamps on one circuit, double-check your cable gauge and breaker. You don’t want your power tripping every time you take a bath. And one last thing: don’t just slap these into the ceiling without thinking. High-wattage lamps get hot at the mounting point. Give them some breathing room so you don’t end up scorching your ceiling panels.
