
Stop the Shivers: Getting Changing Rooms Actually Warm
Let’s be honest: gym and spa changing rooms are usually freezing. You’ve got cold tiles, damp air, and people who just stepped out of a shower and don’t want to wait ten minutes for the room to warm up. If you try to use a standard heater, you’re just fighting a losing battle with the air. That’s why we lean on shortwave infrared (IR). Instead of trying to warm up the whole room, IR goes straight for the person and the surfaces they’re touching. Instant warmth. No waiting. It’s all about radiant energy. Think of it like the sun hitting your skin on a cold day—you feel the heat immediately, even if the air around you is still chilly. We push for high power density here because we want to kill that “cold shock” the second someone walks in. But there’s a catch: water and electricity don’t mix. In a place full of steam and splashes, you need an IPX5 rating. Basically, that means the unit can take a blast of water from any direction and keep on ticking. We do this by sealing the electrical joints and using heavy-duty gaskets around the lamps. You can’t just throw a plastic cover over a regular heater and call it a day. The housing has to be smart—it needs to let the metal expand as it gets hot without breaking the waterproof seal. There are a few things to keep in mind during the install, too. These heaters pull a lot of power. You’ll need to make sure your electrical panel can actually handle the load before you start wiring them in. Also, these things gethot. Really hot. If you mount them too low or put them too close to a wooden bench, you’re going to end up with scorch marks. We usually stick them in the ceiling. It spreads the warmth better and keeps the intense heat away from anyone’s skin.
