
IR Heating vs. Hot Air: Which one actually works for your cleanroom?
When you’re picking out an oven for semiconductor processing, it really just comes down to one thing: how you want to move the heat. Most people start with forced air. You heat up the air, blow it around with fans, and hope it hits your substrate evenly. But IR (infrared) does something completely different. It skips the air entirely. It’s more like sunlight hitting your skin on a summer day—the energy goes straight from the source to the target. The waiting game Here is the annoying part about forced air: the lag. You have to heat up the entire inside of the oven before your parts even start to feel the warmth. It’s a slog. When you’re tracking cycle times by the second, that wait is a killer. It’s a bottleneck that slows everything down. IR is a different story. It hits the target almost instantly. We’ve seen ramp-up times go from minutes down to seconds. No waiting for the air to “stabilize.” You just turn it on, and it’s hot. The trade-offs (because nothing is perfect) One of the coolest things about IR is that you can do zonal heating. You can point the heat exactly where you need it on a wafer without baking the entire chassis. Plus, your cleanroom’s HVAC system will thank you because you aren’t dumping as much excess heat into the room. But, you’ve got to be careful. IR is “line-of-sight.” If your parts are stacked or have weird, complex shapes, you’re going to get cold spots. You can’t just throw it in and forget it; you have to get the lamp positioning exactly right to keep things uniform. And a heads-up: those high-wattage arrays get incredibly hot in small areas. If you don’t spec your cooling manifolds correctly, the oven shell becomes a giant radiator, which can mess with the ambient temperature of your cleanroom. Making the switch A lot of shops moving toward high-density processing are ditching the fans for IR. It takes up less space and the turnaround is way faster. Best of all? You stop paying to heat up a bunch of air that you’re just going to vent out the window anyway. It just makes more sense.
